The Role of Varistor in A Socket
A varistor is a voltage-limiting element that is sensitive to voltage changes. Its characteristics are: at a specified temperature, when the voltage exceeds a certain critical value, its resistance value will decrease sharply, and the current passing through it will decrease sharply, and the relation between the voltage and current is not linear correlation. Therefore, the varistor is also called a nonlinear varistor.

What is the role of the varistor in the socket? The design of the lightning protection socket is naturally a combination of lightning protection components to achieve protection. The lightning protection socket will use a combination of varistor and gas discharge tube. The main function is to absorb the surge voltage and sudden voltage in the circuit, control the voltage to the guaranteed range, and improve the stability and security of the line.
Open a socket and look at the circuit device inside, you will find that there are 3 varistors and 2 temperature insurance tubes in the circuit part, which are wrapped with heat shrinkable tubes respectively. After shrinking at high temperature, the varistor and temperature are better fit, achieving a good temperature response results. The sudden change of voltage can be limited to a suitable range through the varistor, which is useful for preventing the circuit from being struck by lightning in thunderstorm weather, protecting the power supply of the equipment.
