Advantages of Using a Supercapacitor
Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, electric double-layer capacitors, gold capacitors, and Farad capacitors, are electrochemical components developed from the 1970s and 1980s to store energy through polarized electrolytes.
Supercapacitors are different from batteries and may be superior to batteries in some applications. Sometimes a combination of the two is a better approach: combining the power characteristics of a capacitor with the high energy storage of a battery. Supercapacitors can be charged to any potential within their rated voltage range. The battery is limited by its own chemical reaction to work in a narrower voltage range.

The state of charge (SOC) of a supercapacitor is a simple function of voltage, while the state of charge of a battery involves a variety of complex conversions. A supercapacitor can store more energy than a conventional capacitor of the same size, and a battery can store more energy than a supercapacitor of the same size. In some applications where power determines the size of energy storage devices, supercapacitors are a better approach.
Supercapacitors can transmit energy pulses repeatedly without adverse effects, whereas batteries have significantly reduced useful life if they repeatedly transmit high-power pulses. Supercapacitors can be charged quickly and batteries could be damaged by rapid charging. Supercapacitors can be repeatedly cycled hundreds of thousands of times, while battery life is only a few hundred cycles.
